All weekend long, Marc René called me "Don." He didn't notice the first few times, but then apologized. I told him, "That's okay. I actually enjoy it. It means Don is still here with me, you see him in me." Even Brother Zacchaeus, whom I was just introduced to this week, called me Don.

50th Birthday
I did nothing special this day. I was hoping that I would get "Happy Birthday" sung to me by the Chorus at rehearsal, but for some reason, my name was not on the list of birthdays to celebrate this week.

I felt oddly out of place at rehearsal, and minor things that are typical of the Chorus and wouldn't ordinarily bother me felt disproportionately irritating. I left thinking maybe it was too soon to return to the Chorus. Besides, Stanford Hospice is starting a bereavement group next week. It meets Tuesday nights and runs to the Tuesday before Thanksgiving. That might be a better use of my time.

I also think that, if I want to grow musically, I won't be able to do it in the Chorus. It's fun to sing and hang out with the guys, but to develop my voice or to deepen my understanding of musical composition, I'll need to take professional or academic courses.

Glyphic Technology took me (and the rest of the office, plus spouses) to dinner tonight. They asked me where I wanted to go. I said, "Are you sure? I have expensive tastes." They said, "Sure," and so I said, "Chez T.J.," which is the best French restaurant on the peninsula, and just three blocks from the office. They agreed! So we had a fabulous night out.

I had a moment of unease as we sat down. I had always wanted to take Don here. Had I? I asked Brad. He said yes, Don and I and all of Glyphic had celebrated the last Friday the 13th here at Chez T.J. I relaxed. I wasn't enjoying something that Don and I had planned on but never gotten around to.

I won't be able to join Glyphic's next Friday the 13th party. It's in October, and I'll be on the Ashram in Virginia by then, getting ready for Don's memorial there.
