Don's brother, Jerry, shows up around 2 PM for a visit.
Don had heard from Jerry earlier in the week and knew he
intended to come up for a visit, but Don thought Jerry was
going to call first.
After cleaning up in the kitchen and starting the dishwasher,
I leave Don and Jerry to themselves and go shopping for deck
sealant. Although the deck was finished two months ago and
the last rain was more than a month ago, A. K. Landscaping has
still not done the sealing and staining that was part of the
addendum to our agreement. I like their work but oh brother
is it irritating to have the thing only 90% done.
When I get home, I fix dinner for Jerry and Don, using
zucchini and herbs from our garden. Jerry leaves after
supper. Don says he talked to him again about his relationship
with Gina, that the father-child roles they play are not healthy.
He tells me Jerry said he likes it when Gina puts on the child
role. I tell Don that I think that sounds unhealthy all around.
He agrees with me.
Don reads through the mail that arrived yesterday and finds
a notice from EBS. It is dated June 30, Friday, and it says
that Don's COBRA benefits expire on Saturday, July 1, because
he has not made his June payment. Don is justifiably alarmed.
I am outraged. The notice says his "grace period" has expired.
What kind of grace period lasts less than one day? Besides,
Don's bank statement, which also arrived Saturday, clearly
shows a check for $210.48 being cashed on June 2, and the number
on the check is the one Don wrote on the coupon. So, if that
wasn't Don's June payment, what was it? To make sure it was
a check written to EBS, I'm going to order a copy of it sent
to us.
I called EBS and vented my frustration. This was only heightened
by their outgoing message, which said they would be closed
July 3 and 4 in observance of the 4th of July holiday.

Don signed the application form for a temporary disabled parking
permit this morning. If I can get ahold of a doctor today, I'll
get it signed and we won't have to schlepp quite so far across
parking lots.
