Leap Day
I woke from a nap remembering an unusual dream.

I and someone else are at a restaurant when my father drives up with one of his brothers. I'm pleased to see him because I have good news for him. I know he is a fan of a certain male jazz singer, and that very singer will be performing here tonight, along with a relative of Dad's that he has not seen in years!

My father is waiting at the take-out line when I tell him about the jazz artist. He doesn't respond. He gets a dismissive, "Not interested" look on his face and waves me away. I don't even get to tell him about the long-lost relative.

I walk away, puzzled and saddened, for I know if he just stays he will enjoy himself.

There is no need to puzzle over this dream. Neither of my parents has RSVP'd to my wedding invitation. Come to think of it, between the two of them, my parents have been married five times. Their children have not been invited to any of those weddings - though that is easy enough to understand for the first one. And the times would have percluded attending Dad's second wedding. But what about the re-taking of vows at their 35th wedding anniversary? And my mother never invited us to either of her other marriages.

And among their children, we have been married four times - soon, five times. And only one parent has attended even one of those events: Dad came to the celebration of my marriage to Sara.

Don has not heard from his father, either. He has been speculating that his father's lack of response of late has been due to Alzheimer's. My father does not have that excuse, which, in some ways, is its own blessing.
