The Honeymoon (before the wedding)

The Honeymoon (After the Wedding)

We intended to fly back Monday morning, leaving Kona-Kailua around 7:00 AM, eating breakfast at Volcano National Park, and arriving in Hilo in time for our 11:50 AM flight to Honolulu.

That was the plan. Things didn't quite work out that way, though.

February 28

We stopped at Hawaii Volcano National Park for breakfast. I don't think I've ever seen the caldera this clearly before. I look a picture of Don on the lip of Kilauea.
And he took one of me.
We arrived at Hilo airport well before our flight. Well before our flight. "You realize, sir, that these tickets are for tomorrow's flight?" the friendly check-in clerk said. "No," I said, "I didn't." Apparently, when we got our flight rebooked for a February 21 departure, the return date was also changed from February 28 to February 29. Why couldn't they just change the departure date? Because the ticket is for the entire round trip. When we missed our outbound flight, we also lost our place on the return flight.

Don and I spent six hours in Honoluly airport. At least it has a pleasant garden to wait in. I got Don a wheelchair as he was beginning to tire of the long walk between the check-in area and the gate. We settled in, and he read a newspaper with an amusingly relevant photo of an erupting volcano.
