The Honeymoon (before the wedding)

The Honeymoon (Before the Wedding)

Don and I returned to Hawaii in February for a honeymoon and wedding, in that order. It was our intent to spend a week at Kalani Honua Eco-Resort attending a couples' workshop put on by Body Electric on the Big Island. When the workshop was over, we'd drive to the Kona side of the island to meet up with some of Don's friends from his days on the ashram in Virginia. The climax of the trip would be a union ceremony performed at the Place of Refuge on Thursday, followed by a leisurely weekend back in Kona-Kailua, and returning on Monday.

That was the plan. Things didn't quite work out that way, though.

We missed our flight out of SFO and United had overbooked all other flights to Hawaii. We waited on stand-by. Here is Don, doing his best standing-by: a cup of tea (with herbs) and a carton of yogurt close at hand.

We tried everything, including pleading with gate staff, ticket staff, and United Customer Service. Ten hours later, we were still at SFO. We finally gave up and re-ticketed for a departure on Monday.

We arrived two days late for the couples' retreat and Body Electric decided that was too late for us to join the others. However, we did take a trip to see the fresh lava oozing out of the latest crater about 15 miles away. We arrived at the site just at sunset.
Don, with the sunset and the lava flow in the background.
Lava, about as close as I want to get to it.
Don and I threw flowers on the lava as an offering to Pele. His burst into flames before it even reached the flow. Mine lay on the molten rock and withered slowly.

Our last morning at Kalani, breakfast on the lanai.
