The first thing after breakfast, I set up Don's computer, which involved some rather complex rewiring decisions and a bit of room redecorating. It's a beautiful machine, a 333 MegaHz K6 processor with a crisp, high-definition monitor. Don is indeed fortunate to have such a generous employer.

In the afternoon, Don and I went for a walk along the San Andreas fault on Point Reyes. Despite a light drizzle, we enjoyed ourselves, and I took a picture of Don astride the great rift itself.

That evening, I showed Don how to play "Minesweeper" on his new computer. He immediately got hooked on the game, which he renamed "Mindsweeper." The game involves deductive reasoning and Don soon had racked up several wins in a row. He attributed his occasional failures to "fundamental flaws in the basis of Western logic." Later, he and I snuggled as we watched a two-hour episode of Voyager on the VCR I brought him.

This was a day of several firsts. The first first came early, as I drove Don and Jnani into San Francisco. Don wanted to stop by his office to pick up some of his books and reference materials. He is looking forward to doing some small, well-defined project for DMK, something that will help him guage the rate of his recovery.

That visit was brief, though we ran into Keith, Maureen, and Don's immediate supervisor, Cathy. But we had to leave by 9:00 AM in order to make Don's first full day of outpatient therapy at Kentfield. I was surprised (and a little disappointed) to learn that his medical insurance was not going to authorize neuropsychological therapy. I think it would be very helpful. Nevertheless, the first day went well. Don was particularly happy coming out of the speech therapy. He had been given a number of deductive reasoning tests, none of which made him "feel stupid." He credits this to the workout he got from playing "Mindsweeper" the night before.

I made considerable progress on the "Field Tester" applet I'm developing. It should be ready in a preliminary form this weekend.

The ad for Don's Ford Explorer Sport appeared in today's San Jose Mercury News. When I called the News to check on the ad, I got connected to Bill Russell. What a wonderful bit of serendipity that was! I hope it bodes well for our chances of finding a buyer. There hasn't been a single nibble from the Internet site. I've taken new pictures of the car, showing off how good it looks now that it's been detailed. I plan on adding the JPEG to the Internet ad to help spark some interest.

A Fresh Look at the Explorer

I've had to stay away this weekend instead of going to Bolinas. It feels so strange! But Patrick's memorial is this afternoon, and Brian and Kent are here from Washington, DC. Tomorrow, we'll all drive up to Bolinas to see Don. Brian has been following Don's progress on this website and is particularly eager to meet him.

Patrick's memorial was lovely, if a bit long. The day was unexpectedly beautiful, sunny and warm. The cherries were in bloom in a courtyard not far from where the memorial was held, and afterwards the magnolia blossoms glowed in the twilight. I think Patrick, a botonist, would have been pleased by the show. Such magical thinking helps ease his sudden loss.
