I've seen Don do two things today that he couldn't have done a week ago. First, he got from the wheelchair beside his bed into the bed without any help. Second, he changed his sweatshirt while lying in bed. This involved leaning forward from the waist and pulling the old sweatshirt over his head. Last New Year's Eve, only ten days ago, he needed help just to lean forward. Then he pulled the fresh sweatshirt on over his head, using his left hand in a more coordinated and complex way than I have ever seen until now. I wanted so much to help him! But it was a great joy to see him do it himself. One more step towards independence.
